I took Connor in to get his eyes checked today. It was time. Connor has always had a hard time locating an object if you point it out to him. If I told him to go pick up the toy in the living room (pointing at it) he would look every where not knowing what I was talking about. This was my first clue that he had problems with his eyes. Connor is very smart. He knew all of his letters before he was three. We are working on reading now. So when I had him follow along with our scripture reading, I knew something was wrong when he told me he could not see the words. The print was small. Later that week when we were at church, I left Lilian and Connor sitting in there seats while I ran to the library. I met Jaron at the door. As we turned to look at the kids, we both saw Connor squinting as he looked around the room. I was waving my arms, and he could not find me in the crowd of people.
Dr. Mills was great with Connor. Very friendly. He got him talking about dinosaurs. Connor was comfortable and willing to participate in his tests. Connor has awful vision in his right eye. He could tell what object were at a distance with both eyes, but as soon as we covered the left eye, he had no idea what he was looking at. The doctor did a lot of different tests. We go back tomorrow afternoon to do another test on his eyes. He wants to make sure there is no hidden problem. He will dilate his eyes to do the test. The doctor said he will not be able to see well for about 48 hours. I am grateful to finally get answers. The doctor said to not feel guilty about not bringing him in sooner. He is surprised that we caught it when we did. Most kids go undiagnosed until about age 8-10. After they have struggled in school and reading. I am glad that we are taking action now. I am excited to see how things are going to change for this sweet little boy.
